6 Negative Effects of Fad Diets

In its most literal sense, a diet refers to something that you eat habitually.  The best diets are those that are permanent.  The problem with a healthy and permanent diet is that it requires discipline.  Most people are looking for the easy way out.  Enter fad diets.

Going on a fad diet is like purchasing a lottery ticket.  You can get rich playing the lottery.  However, it is far better to try to get rich the old fashion way with hard work, education and courage.  A crash diet can start you down the path to choosing better lifestyle choices and eating a healthier diet.  However, is much more likely that a fad diet is something that will only produce temporary results, if any.

There are certain fundamentals of life that will always be true, no matter what technology does, what scientists discover or how society around us acts. Fundamentals are constant.  There are certain fundamentals that are found in dieting and good health. 

Unfortunately, fundamentals are boring, whereas fads are sexy.  Part of getting caught up in the fad is that you get to join in on the mob mentality.  While that might be exciting for you, it doesn’t really help much for your health.  The most important fundamental of a good diet is that you have to associate pleasure to eating healthy nutritional foods, an associate pain to eating junk food and food with no nutritional value.

Boring.

A much more interesting idea is that you can meet all the junk food and saturated fat that you want as long as it doesn’t contain any carbs.  Or that you can eat whatever you like as long as you use "master clense" once in a while.  Or that somehow a diet with nothing but subway sandwiches is healthy.

Consider this point — if a simple and easy diet fad truly worked, then it would never go out of style.  People always want to lose weight.  Unfortunately, fad diets come and go every month.  They have no staying power because they simply do not work.

Besides being ineffective, some crash diets are downright dangerous.  That is because they often do not give you the appropriate amount of nutrients your body needs to thrive.  While they might even allow you to lose weight, in the long run they will be unhealthy for you.

Skip the fad diets and go with good old fashion dieting fundamentals.
