The Truth About Low Carbohydrate Vegetarian Diets

The Truth about Low Carbohydrate Vegetarian Diets

The Atkins diet may low carb diets extremely popular.  Unfortunately, a large part of the Atkins diet was the ability to eat all kinds of meat — sausage, pork, bacon and so on.  This won’t work so well for vegetarians.  If you want to maintain a vegetarian diet, but want to lose weight the low-carb way, then this article will discuss with you whether this is a feasible option or not.

First of all, it is possible to follow a low carbohydrate vegetarian diet.  While it is possible, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy.  For example, many vegetables are not low in carbohydrates.  While after you have passed the induction phase of a low-carb diet, you’ll be able to eat some of those complex and healthy carbohydrates, you must reintroduce them slowly into your diet.  In the initial phase you will find that your vegetable intake will be restricted greatly.

You can get your food from other sources besides meat, though.  Eggs, tofu, cheeses, protein shakes, imitation meat products, nuts and seeds are just a few examples.  The problem is that even though these food sources are lower than average in terms of carbohydrates, they still contain more carbs than most meats.

With some ingenuity and a lot of discipline, you can create a low carbohydrate vegetarian diet that will meet all your nutritional requirements, while avoiding those undesirable carbs.  However, the truth of the matter is that for most people this diet just isn’t a feasible option.

Let me ask you this — what is your ultimate goal with dieting?  If you’re a vegetarian and you’re trying to lose weight, there are probably easier ways to go about it.  For example, look at the amount of empty calories you have in your diet.  Cut out sodas, replaced nutritionally deficient snacks with ones that are healthy and so on.

Also, you’re forgetting another very important aspect to losing weight — exercise.  If you have no exercise program, it is much better to start exercising regularly than to try to lose weight by adopting a low carbohydrate diet.

If you are absolutely determined to follow a low carbohydrate vegetarian diet, then there are few programs out there that you can use a guide.  This will probably be your best bet at being successful with this diet. If you try to approach it without a plan, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
